Rabbi Joskowicz shakes his finger and tells Pope John Paul II: 'I ask you Mr. Pope to order your own people to remove that last cross from the camp'. (11th of June 1999. Poland, Warsaw, Houses of Parliament). On the 11th of June 1999, The Principal Polish Rabbi Menachem Pinchas Joskowicz during the meeting with Polish Ecumenical Council and the representatives of other religions at Parliament House paid tribute to Local Councils for removing Christian Catholic Crosses at Auschwitz concentration camp and demanded the removal of the 'Papal Cross’. 'It is for me a great honour to take part in this meeting' said Rabbi Joskowicz starting his short conversation with Pope John Paul II. 'I ask you Mr. Pope to order your own people to remove that last cross from the camp'. He was referring to the 'Papal Cross' on the grounds of 'Zwirowisko' at the former Auschwitz concentration camp. Mentioning that he survived the extermination camps during the War II, in his pidgin Polish, Rabbi Pinchas said: 'Auschwitz is a gate to Heaven and through this gate came a lot of people, it is a Holly Place washed in a human blood'. Continuing Rabbi said: 'it is for us, when I come to Auschwitz, place, where I must make self-examination, so I know what was happening here. Further adding, ’here we make the last prayer before the death’.Pope John Paul II very quietly said: ’I understand, this is the prayer we say every day’. As quoted by Catholic Information Agency, His Holiness embraced Rabbi Joskowicz in silence. (opracował Tomasz Kubiak) read on
